Know that you need to have purchased Minecraft in order to change your skin. Bootlegged, illegal copies will not support a skin change, because you need to upload the skin change to, or change your skin from, your Profile page.

Some Minecraft players who have a team that they play with make a part of their skin the same (like a hat) to identify themselves.
Skins can also refer to textures in the game like diamond or stone. This will allow you to hide yourself really easily.
MSS is also a very popular skin editing tool too.
